Doggy Food
Kato, my good old and super sweet (dead) cocker spaniel, had a sensitive stomach. He’d puke if the food isn’t right or he got into the trash or human food in general. He was always like this and so since he was a wee one he was on Sensible Choice (a trainer recommended it). The ingredients were good and the price was right but it was a pain to get it. In Boise, I could buy it at an Ace Hardware. But not all carried it. When we got to Missouri, we had to go to Petco to get it.
After living here a while, we decided to switch dog food and went with Nutro since you can buy it on base. But Shady hated it after a while. She just would pick on her food. Of course Kato still was crazy about it but then Kato would eat anything. So we had to switch to what I thought was a horrible food but Shady loved it, Beneful. Eekk… that thing was made of all the wrong things for dogs (so is Iams and Eukanuba… watch out… high price bad quality). But, Shady ate. Kato, well, he was fine and I think when he puked it wasn’t because of the dog food. But still, each time I buy it or get food for the dogs, it just never felt right.
So now with Max. Well, he ain’t got no sensitive stomach. So I did some research and got some good names. This site has all good foods for dogs and Innova Evo was my top pick. Canidae was also great and the price is best in comparison to the rest. I read all sorts of reviews and these two brands have very (many) favorable reviews. Next was finding a store to buy it and coincidently there’s one in Independence, and soon moving to Lees Summit (better), Brookside Barkery.
At the store, even though I knew what I wanted, the choice making was quite hard. There were so many good stuff in there and even after days of research and reading labels online, I had to read through many of the labels and look at the prices of the products. I ended up with Canidae but I also decided to put the dogs on a 6 months food cycle. After 6 mo. of Canidae I’m going to rotate them with Innova or Solid Gold — depends on Max in 6 months.
Max has been itching, same spot, and Solid Gold seems to have a better review when it comes to itches. I think I’m also going to try some of their supplements. Maybe it’ll help. I’m also thinking of switching vets. The current one said Max was fine and it’s prob. just puppy skin. I’ve had pups and none scratches like Max. It’s not bad but they’re still more frequent than the norm.
I also found lots of good doggy treats for them at the store but I think with the treats we’re going to stick to the Three Dog Bakery. They sell their stuff at the Ace Hardware here so no need to go all the way to the Plaza although special treats from the Plaza is always welcomed :D The one I just bought is apples and cinnamon, Bark and Fetch Low Fat Apples Oatmeal. Smells so good even Drew said the taste is great. Shady LOVES this thing. Max too but they’re a bit hard for his little teeth. I might just get Max small treats from the Barkery until he has stronger teeth. There was another good gourmet, fresh and healthy, treats that someone was selling at the Boise market. They use to sell online. I wonder if they’re still selling. I can’t remember the name but Kato sure loved it. We always had to stop :D
I am such a retard. I can’t believe I read A LOT of reviews, read A LOT of labels, and checked out the food recalls. Well, Shady’s getting old (9 this Dec.), she needs the extra care and I want Max to be healthy (even though we have health insurance for the dogs). I don’t want another sudden sad death like Kato. Am I feeling guilty? Hmmm….
