Shaklee Review
We didn’t get the products just because it was featured in Oprah. We knew about it from a friend and after talking to Susan, who coincidently stamps too, and is a distributor we decided to purchase.
We’ve been getting greener and greener each and everyday. Since I was in Boise, I have been into organic/natural and healthy food, and it wasn’t hard to persuade Drew to convert. It’s like one of those thing, once you’ve tried it, you can’t go back. Although a few things taste a bit weird, for example many organic wheat pasta, taste like cardboard, many things really make your food taste better. Plus, I really believe that due to our food intake, we hardly get sick. Emma just got over a minor cold but this was the first time she got sick this year. For a toddler who goes to daycare/school, I think that says a lot. Anyway, even though the cost is slightly higher (and in Warrensburg, you need to go to a few different stores/vendors to get all that you need), we thought that the benefits outweighs the cost and really, since we’re both working, we can’t really say we can’t afford it. Eating healthy has also forced me to make many more things from scratch. I can’t make pasta from scratch but many other easy items, e.g. pancakes, waffles, pasta sauce, we do.
We’ve also been recycling since we got to Missouri. First it was just what the base would take but after we started building the house we’ve recycled almost everything and every so often we’d drive to Sedalia or Lees Summit with items that the base will not take. I called the trash service and canceled our weekly pick-up. Each month we’ll have half a bin and every so often we’ll have a full bin. This year we’re going to start a compost and our neighbor has agreed to stick a bag or two once a month and pay half the trash pick-up cost. So we’ll see, we might just be ok without any trash service.
So, since we’re eating healthy, recycling, and we did build our house as efficient and green as we can afford it (our winter electric bill has been $65/mo and we have an all electric house), it just makes sense if we clean naturally too. We’ve switched our bath and beauty products already, why not everything else? So I cleaned with baking soda, vinegar, and lemon. It’s fun watching the soda and the vinegar fizz and everything has been clean but it doesn’t work for everything and it does stink. Then our friend told us about Shaklee and we decided to try it out after some research and talking to Susan. For $90 intro price you get all these cleaning stuff and if I were to use the H2 Basic for just window cleaning, I can literally make hundreds (maybe thousands) of bottles of window cleaners. This thing is super concentrate and from the 16oz bottle, you just need two drops to make an 16oz bottle of cleaner. Insane!
We got our cleaning supplies last week. I haven’t tried the clothes and dish soaps yet but the window, all-purpose, and degreaser, have been awesome. I am really bad at window cleaning, streaks galore! But with this cleaning stuff, my windows are shiny!!! I love the all purpose. I can use it on anything. Before I have a cleaner for the stainless, a cleaner for the Zodiaq, and a cleaner for just whatever. Now it’s just one and my counter top and stainless are very nice looking. This is the best part… before, when I have to clean my microwave, I always felt like I need a gas mask, the smell of the cleaner was always so strong. Now, cleaning the microwave is a lot more enjoyable to the senses.
Is it really safe? I’m not sure. There’s very little info on the ingredients on their site and after receiving the package, there was not much there either. Yes the cleaner hardly has any smell but that doesn’t mean anything. If you go to the store and pick up Seventh Generations, you can see very clearly the content of that cleaner, but Shaklee is not like that. So, yes, it does clean very well and yes I believe that it helps the environment in terms of less material (being so concentrated) but the content itself? Still questionable. So, I guess at this point Shaklee’s better than my 409 but is it better than Seventh Generations or others that you might find at the health store? Haven’t done a side-by-side yet. But this site, although with it’s pros and cons comments, makes me believe that at this time, it’s way better than what we used before.
