Day 5: Junk

Junk

With moving comes getting rid of stuff. The above is only a small part of what Drew did today. I think for the most part we know what will be going with us. We don’t have a lot, especially in comparison to how big our home is, and we’re happy. We’re not minimalist but we’re not the opposite either… what would that be? Maximalist?

In my book that’s called being smart. Most people don’t really NEED everything they own. We’ve become more and more a consumerist nation. Instead of just buying stuff, let’s all put our extra money in a retirement, savings, or an emergency account; help needy families; go on a vacation or just do something else more fulfilling that packing our homes with stuff. I’m working on this myself. I’ve been lending my baby stuff to friends. Last month donated a bunch of clothes. And yesterday I started recycling tubs (margarine, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.) and using them as containers to freeze stuff at home. My hubby said the container thing was ghetto. I see it as a little contribution to a vacation fund and a break to the planet.
